Pop Up Windows and SEO
Pop up windows are arguably the most annoying devices used
on web pages. Pop ups (and pop unders) have sent many website
visitor fleeing in frustration and anger. Now, why do pop
up windows still exist on website?
The simply answer is because they work. Many pop up windows
will contain advertisements for products or services. It's
been proven to many marketers that pop up windows do in fact
improve click through rate (CTR) and lead to sales.
From a visitors point of view, however, pop up windows can
be annoying, distracting and downright useless to what they
are trying to accomplish. There are other kinds of advertisements
that also fall into this category such as ads that float across
the screen or pop out only after the visitors cursor travels
near the ad.
To many pop up windows are akin to junk mail delivered by
the post office or telemarketing. In order to sell to 5-percent
of the customers 95-percent have to be annoyed. If you want
visitors to come back to your website (and who doesn't) then
hold off on the pop up windows. They will compensate you with
not only a sigh of relief but with referral traffic as well.
