Link Building Strategies
In order to achieve high rankings in the search engines it
is important to develop some link building strategies. Most
search engines place a high emphasis on the quantity and quality
of incoming links to a website. Also, having outbound links
to authority sites may also help a little in the rankings.
One-Way Links
Besides reciprocal and paid linking, there are some other
options of benefit to most websites. There are many places
on the web that do not require reciprocal or paid linking
to be a part of their websites. These options include many
business directories, subject matter directories, inclusion
in DMOZ.org and if writing is your forte you may publish your
articles (in exchange to a link back to your site) in article
banks or subject matter websites looking for free articles
in exchange for links.
In fact, one-way links are the most potent and important
of all linking building strategies. The more targeted, authoritative
back links one has pointing to one's website, the higher it
will be in the rankings, especially the Google SERPs.
Reciprocal Links
Over the past few years reciprocal link trades have been
devalued a bit by the search engines. But, just because they
have been devalued, doesn't mean that they are of no value.
The two most important things to remember when doing a reciprocal
link trade with another website are to make sure that a link
is targeted for your industry and check on your links occasionally
to make sure they stay put.
Linking to and from off-target websites is of no value to
either party. For instance, rarely would visitors to a Forex
stock trading site have any interest in a website that sells
tubas. So, keep those links tightly focused in your target
market and you'll be Okay.
Also, it is good to check up on your links once you've made
a reciprocal link exchange, since webmasters may redesign
their sites, orphan pages or simply take down your link in
order to gain and advantage in the SERPs for themselves.
Paid Links
Paid links used to be an effective idea for increasing one's
own Page Rank (PR) and getting one's website to the top of
the rankings. But, Google and other search engines have seen
this practice as manipulative and have asked that webmasters
put the nofollow tag on paid links to prevent the passing
of PR. In fact, some sites are getting penalized if they don't
use the nofollow tag.
The rule of thumb now for paid linking is to buy links in
places for traffic purposes only. Once again, you'll want
to make sure that you purchase a link that will send tightly
focused traffic to your website or this will just be money
down the drain.
These are just a few tips on link building strategies that
have worked over the years and still work today. The fundaments
of link building haven't changed much and it continues to
be one of the core strategies to get one's website higher
up in the SERPs.
