Choosing Domain Names
Choosing domain names is something everyone must do when
starting an online business. Sometimes one domain name will
suffice, though many want at least the .com, .net and .org
version of their domain names for branding purposes.
Choosing domain names is not as simple as it sounds. Before
doing so it will be important for many to decide the branding
versus SEO issue first. Some companies want a generic
domain name for SEO purposes in order to achieve higher
search engine rankings. Other companies are simply concerned
with branding and could care less (initially) about the SEO
of the website.
A smart compromise is to pick a brand name that incorporates
a popular generic term into it. This suggestion may not work
for all companies, especially those that are established.
But, for new companies, just testing the market and the field,
picking the right domain name from the get go is paramount.
The advantage of picking a domain name that has a generic
term in it is that this will be easier to rank for in the
search engines. For instance, Fry's Electronics has both a
unique brand and a generic term in the name.
As of this writing, the company ranks well both terms leaving
other electronics companies without a generic term in the
domain name in the dust. When building links to a website
it is important to have generic search terms in the anchor
text.
Many webmaster will not offer a link other than to the official
name of the website. With a generic keyword term in the domain
name this is not a problem. Without it many websites struggle
to gain top rankings.
